Yes the most popular luchador here in 2015 was Gronda.
This 6 foot tall, 220 pound beast beat out Máscara Divina, Angel Azteca Jr., Pimpinela Escarlata and Angel de Oro for the top spot.
But he has not only been Gronda.
He was also called Gran Master, Groond XXX, Gronda XXX and Groon XXX.
Although he is offically retired, he still pops up now and then in International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG), Federacion Universal de Lucha Libre (FULL) and other wrestling promotions.
Not a lot is known about the masked luchador Gronda.
I mean not a lot at all!
We don’t know his real name, but we know when and where he was
born...August 20th, 1960 in Mexico City, Mexico.
I imagine this is because of some disclosures the wrestling promotions
have to make to the Comisión de Box y Lucha Libre Mexico D.F. (the
Mexican commission of Boxing and Professional Wrestling)
Anyway, yep...Gronda will be turning 54 this year.
But you wouldn’t know it by just looking at him.
This guy is Batista/bodybuilder big.
He's 6 feet tall and weighs 220 and it looks like all of that is solid muscle.
Gronda was trained by luchadors Flash, Aullido and Fuerza Guerrera.
He has always wrestled masked.
First as Maximo el Gladiador, then Drago, the El Magnate (once), then Luzbel and finally Gronda.
Actually there are two Grondas now, similar to the situation they had with La Parka and LA Park.
And to tell you the truth...neither are really good wrestlers.
They are just REALLY big!
On December 11th, 2013, legendary Mexican luchador Octagón was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Miguel Hidalgo, D.F. Octagón (Juan Escalera) has been wrestling December 1981 and in his 32 years in the ring has held a lot of titles. This is his second such honor because in 2011 he was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame.
Octagón was involved in one of the greatest Lucha Libre matches of all time when he and El Hijo del Santo took on La Pareja del Terror (the late Art Barr and the late Eddie Guerrero) at AAA When Worlds Collide on November 6th, 1994. The event was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California and was sponsored by AAA and the WCW.
The last time I did a write up on masked luchador Averno he was masked.
That was back in 2007.
But on June 17th, 2011 at Juicio Final, Averno was defeated by La Máscara in a Mask vs Mask match and he revealed that his real name was Renato Ruíz Cortes (his father is CMLL referee Rodolfo Ruíz) and that he was 34 years old and originally from Mexico City.
Renato is still wrestling and on April 26th, 2013 at the Arena Mexico 57th Anniversary Show Averno defeated Místico La Nueva Era to win the vacant Mexican National Welterweight Championship.
It's been quite a while since I have done anything on masked luchador Atlantis.
2007 actually.
Of course no one knows Atlantis' real name as is the case with most masked wrestlers.
We do know that he was born on September 28th, 1962 in Los Altos, Jalisco and his brother wrestled under the name Atlántico.
He made his debut back on June 12th, 1983 and was trained by "Diablo" Velazco.
Atlantis has worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) since his debut, actually starting out when they were still called Empressa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL).
He has held almost every major title in CMLL as well as titles in Lucha Libre Azteca, Michinoku Pro Wrestling and Universal Wrestling Entertainment.
Besides wrestling, he has appeared in three movies, La Fuerza Bruta ("The Brute Power") in 1991, Octagón y Atlantis, la revancha ("Octagón and Atlantis, the revenge") in 1992 and Atlantis al rescate ("Atlantis to the rescue") in 2007.
Now for a luchador who is a bit different from the others I have profiled here in the past. Mario González Lozano was born on April 18th, 1969 in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. He works as Pimpinela Escarlata, an Exotico for the Mexican Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) wrestling promotion. Exoticos are ...well...different from the wrestlers we have here in the WWE or TNA, with the possible exception of the old Billy and Chuck tag team.
Exoticos are not new in Lucha Libre. They have been around since the 1950s, with luchadores like Adorable Rubí, Sergio el Hermoso and Bello Greco, but Pimpinela Escarlata has helped give legitimacy to this style of luchador, having held the Pista Arena Revolucion Welterweight Title, the IWA Light Heavyweight Title, the National Light Heavyweight Title, the National Middleweight Title, and one half of the AAA Mixed Tag Team Titles with Fabi Apache.
He was trained by Halcón Suriano and Héctor López, and made his debut in Lucha Libre on June 15th, 1988 in Matamoros, Coahuila.
Mexican Luchador Joe Lider was born Jose de Jesus Alvarez on June 2, 1978 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
He was trained by Luchadores Aullido and Javier Mariscal, and made his pro wrestling debut on December 8, 1993 at Arena Oblatos.
Joe currently works for the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) wrestling promotion in Mexico.
He has held the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración AAA World Tag Team Championship twice, once with Crazy Boy and once with Nicho el Millionario (who you might know better as Psicosis).
When he held the title with Nico, they set a record, holding the belts for 551 days before losing the titles to Taiji Ishimori and Takeshi Morishima from La Legión Extranjera.
Joe also once held the Mexican National Atomicos Championship with Psicosis II, Crazy Boy and Juventud Guerrera.
Outside of AAA, he has held the Xtreme Latin American Wrestling (XLAW) Junior Heavyweight Championship three times, the Distrito Jalisco Middleweight Championship, the Distrito Jalisco Heavyweight Championship, the New Wrestling Generation (NWG) Extreme Championship three times and the Tonala Absolute Championship.
It's been a while since I did a write up on Chessman (2007 to be exact) so here are some updates.....
Chessman was born Kevin Citlali Zamora on July 2, 1975 in Villa Nicolás Romero, Mexico State.
He was trained by luchadores Super Taka, El Canek and Pepe Casas and made his lucha libre debut on July 3, 1996 at the Arena López Mateos in Tlalnepantla, Mexico State, wrestling masked as M-357 (357 Magnum) .
During his wrestling career, he has been known as M-357, Magnum, Quinto Elemento (The Fifth Element) and finally Chessman.
He took the name Chessman, not from the game, but from the notorious criminal, Caryl Chessman.
Chessman works for the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) wrestling promotion, and has been a part of many wrestling stables such as The Black Family, Lucha Libre Latina (LLL), La Secta Cibernetica, La Secta del Mesías and Los Hell Brothers.
During his career he has been nicknamed El Apostol de la Maldad" ("The Bad Apostle"), "El Asesino de la luz Roja" ("The Red Light Assassin"), Dark Chessman and El Asesino de la luz Negra" ("The Black Light Assassin").
Chessman has held the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship (with Tiffany), the Mexican National Tag Team Championship (with Electroshock) the Mexican National Atómicos Championship (3 times, once with Ozz, Escoria and Cuervo and twice with The Psycho Circus (Killer Clown, Psycho Clown and Zombie Clown) and the UWA World Light Heavyweight Championship.

Último Guerrero (The Last Warrior) is a Mexican Luchador that wrestles for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL).
Ultimo is not related to the famous Gory Guerrero or any of his children.
"Guerrero" is the Spanish word for warrior.
He was trained at "Gimnasio El Ranchero" by Tinito and Halcón Suriano and made his lucha libre debut as "Halcón Dorado" in September 1990 at the Gómez Palacio, Durango.
Último Guerrero is a charter member of Los Guerreros de Infierno / Los Guerreros de Atlantida and besides CMLL, he has worked for TNA where he was part of Team Mexico, and won the 2008 World X Cup.
Ultimo has held sevral titles during his lucha libre career including the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship, the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship, the CMLL World Tag Team Championship (5 times), the CMLL World Trios Championship (2 times), he won the Copa de Arena Mexico Tournament in 1999 with Rey Bucanero and Satanico, he won the Junior Grand Prix in 2006 and 2007, he won the Torneo Gran Alternativa twice, once with Blue Panther in 1999 and with Dragón Rojo, Jr. in 2008 and he won the Universal Tournament in 2009.
Outside of CMLL, he won the World Wrestling Association (WWA) World Tag Team Championship with Perro Aguayo, Jr.
And of course he won the TNA 2008 World X Cup with his partners Volador Jr., Rey Bucanero and Averno.
Luchador Mephisto was born on December 10, 1968 in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. He is the son of Luchador Astro Rey/Kahoz, and the nephew of El Gallo Giro and Rey Halcón. Mephisto was trained by Astro Rey, Franco Colombo, El Gallo Giro, Rey Halcón, Negro Casas and Pacoman. He made his pro wrestling debut in July 1988, in Zecatapec, Morelos. Mephisto often tag teams with Averno, and they are considered one of the top tag teams in Mexico. He wrestles for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico. Durning his career, he has held the Mexican National Trios Championship with Satánico and Averno, the Mexican National Welterweight Championship, the CMLL World Tag Team Championship three times with Averno and the CMLL World Welterweight Championship.
The man who would become Luchador El Felino was born on March 22, 1964 in Mexico City, Mexico.
He is the son of wrestler and referee Pepe Casas, the brother of Negro Casas and Heavy Metal, the cousin of Black Star the uncle of Kid Tiger and Puma King, and the husband of Princesa Blanca.
El Felino was trained by Pepe Casas and Raúl Reyes, and he made his lucha libre debut in 1982.
During his wrestling career he has held the Arena Apatlaco Welterweight Title, the Mexican National Welterweight Championship, the Mexican National Trios Championship with Volador, Jr. and Safari, the CMLL World Welterweight Championship 3 times, he won the CMLL Torneo Gran Alternativa with Tigre Blanco in 1999, he won the Leyenda de Plata ("Silver Legend" a tournament in honor of El Santo" in 2002, the Distrito Federal Trios Titles with Arkangel and Guerrero de la Muerte, the IWRG Intercontinental Tag Team Titles with Pantera,
the IWRG Intercontinental Trios Championship with Negro Casas and Heavy Metal and the WWA World Welterweight Championship twice.
El Zorro was born Jesus Cristóbal Martínez Rodriguez on July 20th, 1975 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
He was trained by Jorge Rodríguez and Flash, and he made his pro wrestling debut (as Neurosis) on October 2, 1993 at the Plaza de Toros Jorge Rivera in Zapopan, Jalisco.
He lost the Neurosis mask to Cesar Dantés and soon after adopted the El Zorro gimmick.
El Zorro has has some colorful story lines involving luchador Charly Manson, a cursed Mayan mask and mind control.
He is currently in Konnan's La Legión Extranjera, claiming that he is a Spaniard, not a Mexican.
El Zorro has wrestled for the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración, Comisión de Box y Lucha Libre Mexico D.F., Comisión de Box y Lucha de Guadalajara, IWA Puerto Rico, Universal Wrestling Association, World Wrestling Organization wrestling promotions, and also made a few brief appearances for the old WWF show, WWF Super Astros.
Roberto Guadalupe Estrada Zúñiga was born on January 10, (year unknown) in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Wrestling in Lucha Libre as Apolo Estrada Jr.,he is presumed to be the son of Luchadore Apolo Estrada. Apolo wrestles for the Federación Internacional de Lucha Libre (FILL) wrestling promotion in Mexico and he has held several titles there. The FILL Welterweight Wrestling Title (twice), the FILL Middleweight Wrestling Championship, FILL Tag Team Wrestling Championships with Estrella Dorada Jr, the FILL Trios Wrestling Championship, with Chucho Mar Jr. and Estrella Dorada Jr. and with Monje Negro Jr. and Estrella Dorada Jr. and the FILL Atomicos Titles with Chucho Mar Jr., Estrella Dorada Jr. and Gato Volador.
Mexican Luchadore Angel del Futuro was born on October 8, 1977. He was trained in wrestling by his father Zimba. Angel del Futuro's pro wrestling debut was in 1990. His favorite wrestling moves are the La Magistral, Frog Splash and the Huracarrana.
José Ángel Vargas Sánchez was born August 2, 1936 in Atoyac, Jalisco. He was better known by his wrestling name, Ángel Blanco (White Angel). Jose wrestled as El Ranchero Vargas, cruz Diablo, El Gato Negro and finally El Ángel Blanco. His pro wrestling debut was in 1958, in Morelia, Michoacán. Angel was trained by Diablo Velazco and Miguel Navarrete. Three of his sons and a son-in-law have wrestled under variations of his ring name, Ángel Blanco Jr., Ángel Blanco Jr., El Hijo del Ángel Blanco I, El Hijo del Ángel Blanco II. Angel lost his mask to El Solitario on December 8, 1972 at the Arena México. He held the NWA World Light Heavyweight Wrestling Title, National Heavyweight Wrestling Title, National Tag Team Titles, with Dr. Wagner, NWA Americas Tag Team Titles, again with Dr. Wagner and the National Cruiserweight Title. Jose passed away on April 26, 1986 in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
Angel Azul (Blue Angel) is a Mexican Luchadore. He was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Angel was trained in wrestling by Mr. Lince (Luis Vazquez) His favorite wrestling moves are the La Tapatía (surfboard) and the Cangrejo (boston crab)
Juan Manuel Zúñiga was born on June 24, 1963, in Cd Lerdo, Durango, Mexico. He was better known in Mexico under his wrestling name, Ángel Azteca. Angel was trained by Héctor López, Asterión and Dr. Wagner. His pro wrestling debut was June 1980 in Torreón, Coahuila. He lost his mask to Arkangel de la Muerte on December 5, 2003, in Arena México, Mexico City. During his career he held numerous titles. The Laguna Lightweight Wrestling Title, Arena Victoria Tag Team Wrestling Titles, National Tag Team Wrestling Titles( with Atlantis, with Super Parka), National Welterweight Wrestling Title, NWA World Middleweight Wrestling Title, National Trios Titles (with El Hijo del Santo and Super Muñeco) and the UWA World Light Heavyweight Title. Angel Azteca passed away after a match in Campeche, on March 18, 2007.
