Yes the most popular luchador here in 2015 was Gronda.
This 6 foot tall, 220 pound beast beat out Máscara Divina, Angel Azteca Jr., Pimpinela Escarlata and Angel de Oro for the top spot.
But he has not only been Gronda.
He was also called Gran Master, Groond XXX, Gronda XXX and Groon XXX.
Although he is offically retired, he still pops up now and then in International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG), Federacion Universal de Lucha Libre (FULL) and other wrestling promotions.
The luchadores de lucha libre, past and present like Pimpinela Escarlata, Texano jr, Black Abyss, Juventud Guerrera, Gronda, Averno, El Apache and more.

Triple AAA Luchador - Gronda
Not a lot is known about the masked luchador Gronda. I mean not a lot at all! We don’t know his real name, but we know when and where he was born...August 20th, 1960 in Mexico City, Mexico. I imagine this is because of some disclosures the wrestling promotions have to make to the Comisión de Box y Lucha Libre Mexico D.F. (the Mexican commission of Boxing and Professional Wrestling)
Anyway, yep...Gronda will be turning 54 this year. But you wouldn’t know it by just looking at him. This guy is Batista/bodybuilder big. He's 6 feet tall and weighs 220 and it looks like all of that is solid muscle.
Gronda was trained by luchadors Flash, Aullido and Fuerza Guerrera. He has always wrestled masked. First as Maximo el Gladiador, then Drago, the El Magnate (once), then Luzbel and finally Gronda.
Actually there are two Grondas now, similar to the situation they had with La Parka and LA Park. And to tell you the truth...neither are really good wrestlers.
They are just REALLY big!

Octagón in the Hall of Fame
On December 11th, 2013, legendary Mexican luchador Octagón was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Miguel Hidalgo, D.F.
Octagón (Juan Escalera) has been wrestling December 1981 and in his 32 years in the ring has held a lot of titles.
This is his second such honor because in 2011 he was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame.
Octagón was involved in one of the greatest Lucha Libre matches of all time when he and El Hijo del Santo took on La Pareja del Terror (the late Art Barr and the late Eddie Guerrero) at AAA When Worlds Collide on November 6th, 1994.
The event was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California and was sponsored by AAA and the WCW.

Luchador Averno - CMLL
The last time I did a write up on masked luchador Averno he was masked.
That was back in 2007.
But on June 17th, 2011 at Juicio Final, Averno was defeated by La Máscara in a Mask vs Mask match and he revealed that his real name was Renato Ruíz Cortes (his father is CMLL referee Rodolfo Ruíz) and that he was 34 years old and originally from Mexico City.
Renato is still wrestling and on April 26th, 2013 at the Arena Mexico 57th Anniversary Show Averno defeated Místico La Nueva Era to win the vacant Mexican National Welterweight Championship.

Atlantis - CMLL
It's been quite a while since I have done anything on masked luchador Atlantis.
2007 actually.
Of course no one knows Atlantis' real name as is the case with most masked wrestlers.
We do know that he was born on September 28th, 1962 in Los Altos, Jalisco and his brother wrestled under the name Atlántico.
He made his debut back on June 12th, 1983 and was trained by "Diablo" Velazco.
Atlantis has worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) since his debut, actually starting out when they were still called Empressa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL).
He has held almost every major title in CMLL as well as titles in Lucha Libre Azteca, Michinoku Pro Wrestling and Universal Wrestling Entertainment.
Besides wrestling, he has appeared in three movies, La Fuerza Bruta ("The Brute Power") in 1991, Octagón y Atlantis, la revancha ("Octagón and Atlantis, the revenge") in 1992 and Atlantis al rescate ("Atlantis to the rescue") in 2007.

Luchador - Místico

Místico (born December 22, 1982) is a Mexican professional wrestler currently working for the lucha libre promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), and the biggest star of Lucha Libre.
Raised in the notorious Tepito district of Mexico City, he began his career wrestling under his father's name as Dr. Karonte, Jr. at the age of 15. In 2000, he adopted the name of Astro Boy and started getting noticed working undercards for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. In 2004, he was repackaged as "Místico" with a religious gimmick. He debuted in Arena México in June and spent much of the following months teaming with Volador, Jr. and Misterioso II in the second or third matches on the card. He participated in the 6th Annual Leyenda de Plata tournament but his push didn't take off until he won the Gran Alternativa tag team tournament with established star, El Hijo del Santo, claiming "Místico es chévere". Shortly afterwards, the bookers began teaming him with other established técnicos (faces) such as Negro Casas and Shocker against the big rudo (heel) groups, Los Guerreros del Infierno and La Furia del Norte. His stature made him an underdog and his high flying moves such as diving armdrags made him popular with Mexico City crowds.
In 2005, he continued working against Los Guerreros, winning important singles matches against Rey Bucanero, Mephisto and Tarzan Boy in CMLL's secondary arena, Arena Coliseo. He won his first title by defeating Guerreros member Averno for the NWA Middleweight championship on February 11. The match was well received by the audience in attendance and fans near the ring threw money into the ring as a sign of appreciation. Two weeks later, he participated in his first singles main event match when he faced Guerreros leader Último Guerrero in Arena México. He won the fall in two falls after Guerrero was disqualified in the first fall and was pinned in the second with a small package. The match sparked a program with the recently turned Dr. Wagner, Jr. teaming with Místico against Último Guerrero and Rey Bucanero. After that program died down, Místico became involved in a feud with Perro Aguayo, Jr. and his Los Perros del Mal group. After defeating Aguayo in a singles match, the two exchanged hair vs. mask challenges so Místico was added to the already planned eight-man cage match where the last man in the cage lost his hair or mask. Místico joined Negro Casas, Heavy Metal, Universo 2000 and Máscara Mágica against Aguayo's group consisting of Damián 666, Halloween and Héctor Garza leading up to the match but neither Místico or Aguayo were involved in the finish of the match where Damián pinned Máscara Mágica.
In September, he reheated his feud with Último Guerrero with another singles match but in the third fall, he was attacked by Atlantis, turning Atlantis heel. Místico worked a short program with Atlantis but after he defeated Atlantis in a singles match in October, Atlantis focused more on former tag partner Blue Panther.
In 2006, Místico was the biggest star in Mexico. He main evented eighteen events during the year that drew more than ten thousand people. In the early part of the year, he teamed up with Black Warrior in two unsuccessful CMLL Tag Team Championship challenges. In the second one, Black Warrior turned on Místico and the two began a feud. While Black Warrior was wrestling in Japan, Místico and Negro Casas defeated Averno and Mephisto for the CMLL Tag titles on April 14. When Warrior returned, the feud picked up again and Black Warrior handed Místico his first major singles defeat when he pinned him and took his NWA Middleweight Championship on a May 12 Arena México show. On September 29, Místico defeated Black Warrior in a mask vs. mask match in the main event of the CMLL 73rd Anniversary show, his first major mask win.
After winning a singles match versus Averno, he won the right to fight him in a mask vs mask match. No date has been set yet.
On April 10, 2007, Místico defeated Mephisto to capture the CMLL World Welterweight Championship.
Místico was given a tryout for World Wrestling Entertainment on February 27, 2007 at the ECW/Smackdown! tapings in San Jose, CA, wrestling Jamie Noble in a dark match. Místico was thought to be in contract negotiations with the WWE but negotiations could not take place when he admitted to John Laurinaitis that he still has a CMLL contract, however those close to Místico believe he would be able to get out of his contract and still join WWE. There are concerns with his working visa, not being able to speak English, and being unfamiliar with the WWE ring style.
WWE is once again considering to sign Místico after Rey Mysterio expressed that Místico is a great wrestler.
That bothers me, because I would hate to see a man thats shaping up to become a Lucha Libre legend, ruined by Vince McMahon.

Luchador - Hector Guerrero

Hector Manuel Guerrero Llanes (born October 11, 1954) is a Mexican-American professional wrestler, better known simply by his paternal name, Hector Guerrero. He is currently working for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling as a Spanish color commentator and road agent.
Guerrero was born in Mexico City, Mexico, but his family relocated to El Paso, Texas in the United States of America when he was young. Guerrero attended the University of Texas at El Paso, graduating with a bachelor's degree in physical education.
Guerrero trained as a wrestler under his father, Gory, and debuted in 1977 as Hector Guerrero. Early in his career, he wrestled primarily in California, often teaming with his brothers Chavo and Mando.
In the mid-1980s, Guerrero wrestled for NWA: Jim Crockett Promotions as the masked Lazer-Tron. Guerrero teamed with Jimmy Valiant and feuded with the New Breed. Guerrero went on to feud with Denny Brown for the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship, and teamed with Manny Fernandez as "The Latin Connection" until Fernandez turned on him to join Rick Rude and Paul Jones.
In the late 1980s, Guerrero wrestled in the American Wrestling Association, winning the AWA World Tag Team Championship with Dr. D.
After leaving the NWA, Guerrero joined the United States Wrestling Association, where he became known for throwing a compound (supposedly extracted from jalapeño) in the eyes of his opponents to temporarily blind them. Guerrero teamed with Dr. Diablo until inadvertently throwing the extract in Diablo's eyes and blinding his own partner, causing the team to split.
In 1990, Guerrero appeared in the World Wrestling Federation at the 1990 Survivor Series, wearing a turkey costume and performing under the name Gobbledygooker. Although the costume was new, he did reappear as the Gobbledygooker in the Gimmick Battle Royal at WrestleMania X-Seven.
Guerrero appeared with the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion in 1995, unsuccessfully challenging 2 Cold Scorpio for the ECW Television Championship at Return of The Funker.
Guerrero appeared in World Championship Wrestling in 1997 to confront his brother Eddie about his onscreen behavior. He left the promotion after losing to his brother in a singles match on an episode of WCW Saturday Night. Eddie Guerrero stated in his autobiography that Hector left WCW because he was unhappy with the way he was treated.
On March 1, 2007, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling announced that Guerrero had been hired by TNA as a Spanish color commentator and road agent. On March 8, 2007, he was presented with an award for "achievements in the sport of professional wrestling" by TNA and the Hispanic Legacy Foundation. [2] At Lockdown 2007, Hector helped Team 3-D defeat LAX in an Electric Steel Cage Tag Team Match for the NWA World Tag Team Championship when he stopped Konnan from entering the cage.

Luchador - Salvador "Gory" Guerrero Quesada

Salvador "Gory" Guerrero Quesada (January 11, 1921 – April 18, 1990) was one of the premier Hispanic professional wrestlers in the early days of Lucha Libre when most wrestlers were imported from outside of Mexico.
Gory was born in Ray, Arizona but his family moved shortly thereafter to California where he went to an English school. His family moved to Guadalajara, Jalisco in Mexico and Gori used his language skills at a pottery shop. In Guadalajara, he joined the local "Box y Lucha" club (intending to learn boxing) and was trained by the legendary trainer Diablo Velasco as one of his first protegés. He made his debut shortly after in 1937 in Guadalajara.
Over the next few years, he would make important friends, learn more about the tricks of the trade and amateur wrestling. He made his debut for the Mexico City promotion Empresa Mexicana de la Lucha Libre in 1943. He quickly rose the ranks, being named "Rookie of the Year" and winning two titles in 1945, the National Welterweight title (which he never lost) and the National Middleweight title. His feud with Cavernario Galindo is considered to be one of the first true blood feuds in the history of professional wrestling. The feud later evolved into a tag feud, with El Santo on the side of Gori Guerrero, forming the legendary tag team La Pareja Atómica, and Black Shadow teaming with Galindo.
He continued his success, defeating Tarzán López for the NWA Middleweight title and even wrestling a match with NWA World Heavyweight Champion Lou Thesz. He broke away from EMLL and worked as an independent in the mid-sixties, also beginning to branch out into booking. As he got older he was wrestling less and less until he retired in the 1980s. He died at the age of 69 in 1990 in El Paso, Texas.
Gori is best remembered for his aggressive technical style and he is credited with the invention of La de a Caballo (or "Camel Clutch" as it is known in the U.S. since it was used by Middle Eastern heels like The Sheik) and the Gori Special, a back to back stretch hold which has been modified into a facebuster move (Gory Bomb) or a neckbreaker/backbreaker (Widow's Peak). He was well respected by several generations of luchadores for his toughness and ability.
A key part of his legacy are his children, Chavo Guerrero Sr. (whose son Chavo Guerrero Jr. is also a wrestler), Hector, Mando, and Eddie Guerrero. He also has two daughters, Cuqui and Linda. His wife Herlinda was the sister of Mexican wrestler Enrique Llanes. He was a born-again Christian and raised his children in the Baptist Church.
